Nice spots in Amsterdam

You will be studying in Amsterdam next year, that’s great! Amsterdam is a vibrant city full of entertainment and interesting spots to visit. In this article you will find some places where we ‘Gyrini’ like to go!

Nightlife

  • Cafe De Gieter

This bar/pub is located near Leidseplein and is a typical place student place. Why? Because a beer is only €1.50, it’s free entry and they’re ope every day of the week!

  • Club No. 129

Only a minute away from De Gieter lies one of Gyrinus’ favorite clubs: No. 129! We’re sure you will visit this club in one of the first weeks of the year and you will come back many more times..

  • Paradiso

This club is situated in an old church and it’s one of the best places for a party or a concert. Thursday is a good night to visit Paradiso, since there is a dance party with all types of music for 3 euros!

  • Chupitos

The place to be if you love shots! They have a menu with more than 150 different shots, all made in an unique way…

  • Ziggo Dome

Not all party places are located around the Leidseplein… The Ziggo Dome is the newest concert venue in the Netherlands where live music sounds at its best. There is capacity for 17,000 people and their programme includes various major artists.

Museums

  • Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is the largest and best-known museum of Amsterdam. The building is a national monument designed by the architect Cuijpers (the same as central station). It has a collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, with Rembrandt’s Nightwatch as the centerpiece. Also without entering the museum itself it’s worth visiting the place: there’s a bicycle tunnel underneath the museum!

  • The EYE

Eye is a film museum that has a beautiful view over the river ‘Het IJ’. Eye is a place where you can watch films, visit exhibitions and relax on the terrace of the eye restaurant.

  • Foam

The Foam is a nice museum with changing exhibitions of famous photographers.

Parks and Nature

  • Vondelpark

The Vondelpark is Amsterdam’s most popular park, attracting thousands of visitors every day. When the weather is fine it’s the perfect place to hangout and picnic.  

  • Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest)

Located near de VU and Uilenstede, the Amsterdamse Bos is Amsterdam’s largest park and recreational area. It offers plenty of space for a relaxing picnic with friends, to sport or to do other activities. There’s also a little lake where you can swim during summer and rent a canoe!

 

Food

  • Foodhallen (and Filmhallen!)

The Foodhallen is located in a former tram station. Inside the halls you find numerous food stands. Go to one of the stands and order whatever you love!

  • Stadskantine

This cozy student restaurant offers a cheap menu which changes daily! For €8,50 you can enjoy the fish, meat or veggie ‘daghap’.

  • Vapiano

This is the place you should go to if you want an affordable Italian meal. They have many locations in Amsterdam so there’s always one near you!

Are you sure you eat enough vegetables? Are you only drinking beer and eating pizza? The student life will certainly not be the most healthy period of your life… But don’t worry! At SLA you can eat a very healthy salad from 8,50 euros!
